How it works
AI does the labor. A person signs off.
What the Department of Justice said, and our answer
“Advanced technology, such as generative AI, does not yet reliably automate the remediation of inaccessible content at scale, and staff resources and availability continue to pose significant challenges.”
We agree. One-click tools guess at structure from font sizes and positions, and their output usually has to be redone by hand. Our answer combines three parts, so that what can be proven is proven, and what needs judgment gets a person.
Three parts, every document
Vision models propose structure
A model reads each rendered page the way a sighted person does and proposes headings, lists, tables, reading order, alternative text and language, in a fixed format so the shape of the result is guaranteed.
Software validates
Every file is checked against PDF/UA-1 with veraPDF, re-checked for contrast, and compared word by word with the original. These checks are pass or fail, with no judgment involved.
A person signs off
A Purely Works reviewer covers what only a person can judge, and signs every file with their name and the date.
Your words are never rewritten
The model changes structure, not content. After remediation we compare every word of the fixed file with the original. Any difference, even a single word, goes to a reviewer, and the final audit records the result.
What our reviewers check
- Approving what to do with each high-priority document: fix, archive, convert to a web page, or remove.
- Checking alt text on images that carry information, such as charts, organization charts, maps and signatures.
- Reviewing reading order and structure on complex layouts and forms.
- Confirming table headers on merged or nested tables.
- Listening to a sample of high-priority documents in a real screen reader.
- Reviewing any document where the content comparison shows a difference.
- Final approval and sign-off, on every document.
About two thirds of the PDF/UA checklist can be tested by software; the rest takes judgment. See what makes a PDF accessible.
